Located at the very beginning of the Downtown Mall, this International Market sets the stage for the flavors found in this area, as well as a taste of cultures from around the world that represent the different cultures of students who attend the University of Virginia. Since the Downtown Mall is a heavy “hotspot” for restaurants, with some of them being international, this market would give the opportunity for additional sourcing of food for these restaurants. It also gives the opportunity for International students to share a taste of their country’s best dishes with their new-found friends in Charlottesville. Eating food from your own country is also comforting in times of homesickness. The hybridity this building offers is something not offered in most places, with the opportunity to try food from other countries, buy the ingredients used in the preparation of the dish, and then actually learn how to make it with the available cooking classes. Although there are some public spaces for rest in the center of the pedestrian Mall, the need for greenery and open space is always present.
